Roden Crater - James Turrell

I am personally interested in this space for a variety of reasons. It is a monumental project that combines sculpture, architecture and nature into one. A site of a variety of spaces that come together to offer a specific experience, an appreciation of light. I want to know how these spaces physically come together and what the actual experience of them is. What is my takeaway from an experience like this? Does the nature of the space take on a spiritual quality? Does the fact that it is a remote location add to a sense of this being a very unique and special experience? Who is this space intended for and how will it actually be used when it is open to the public?

Roden Crater, located in the Painted Desert region of Northern Arizona, is an unprecedented large-scale artwork created within a volcanic cinder cone by light and space artist James Turrell. Representing the culmination of the artist’s lifelong research in the field of human visual and psychological perception, Roden Crater is a controlled environment for the experiencing and contemplation of light.
